Adobe MAX Receives 2010 Mobile Innovators Award for Innovation – Event Breaks New Ground for Technology, Creative and Business professionals

WebProfessionals.org, the membership supported association for Web Professionals, and MobileInnovators.org, an online resource for Mobile Application Developers, announced today that Adobe MAX 2010 Los Angeles is the winner of WebProfessionals.org annual Mobile Innovators Award, recognizing the Adobe Corporation and its annual Max Conference, the leading event for technology and creative professionals for its leadership in using cutting-edge information technology and Rich Internet Applications (RIA) tools to drive mobile application development innovation, jobs and for improving the consumer user experience.

Mobile Innovation, Cell phone and wireless laptop internet use have each grown more prevalent over the last year. According to Pew Research Center, nearly half of all adults (47%) go online with a laptop using a Wi-Fi connection or mobile broadband card (up from the 39% who did so as of April 2009) while 40% of adults use the internet, email or instant messaging on a mobile phone (up from the 32% of Americans who did this in 2009). This means that 59% of adults now access the internet wirelessly using a laptop or cell phones

“User expectations and experiences are evolving rapidly, and Adobe has long taken the lead in creating the tools and services to design for the future.” said Bill Cullifer, Executive Director WebProfessionals.org. “Adobe’s RIA product, Air 2.5 system for example will allow application developers to be able to design a single piece of code and then utilize it in multiple ways across a wide range of devices that delivers innovation that fuels jobs for Web professional’s and expands the user experience.”

“With the exponential growth of mobile use, companies are facing increasing demands from customers who want to connect anytime, any place and on any device,” said Brett Cortese, president of Universal Mind, an Abode Max show participant and four-time Max Award nominee. “Adobe MAX is the leading event for mobile application designers and developers, so it’s great to see both the show and Adobe recognized as the winner of the Mobile Innovators Award.”

Universal Mind just posted about their experience developing an app for the RIM PlayBook using the Adobe Air SDK and their announcement at Adobe MAX 2010 taking place this week in Los Angeles, CA.

In this six minute interview, I caught up with Joe to get his take on the project, his take on the Adobe MAX event and opportunities for Web professionals developing Mobile Applications with Adobe Air.

RIM PlayBook SDK Offers Smooth Development

According to the UniversalMind Blog, the team had the privilege to be one of the first companies to develop an app for Blackberry’s new tablet—the RIM Playbook. Here are some of our initial thoughts on developing in this environment:

The app we developed was a Fantasy Football application—the goal was for it to be both fun and easy to use. It was entirely built using Adobe Flash Builder and the BlackBerry SDK. The workflow allowed us to deploy a working tablet application in days with full touch and gesture interactions that you would expect in a tablet device.

The framework SDK is integrated into Flash Builder which made for a very familiar dev environment. Compiling the application and deploying it to the PlayBook Simulator is quick and easy with multiple ways to see your application in a working environment. Without a actual device in hand we relied on the Simulator to test all the interactions, so it was a key piece of the workflow.

We also reused several pieces of code, which made creating interactions even faster. The SDK controls made creating interactive lists a snap: all the kinetic interactions are built into the controls, like pulling on a list and getting the elastic snap that many users are familiar with. Integrating video is seamless with the built in video controls, which also allowed for customization. The framework also allows developers to create consistent applications using the array of controls that are built into the OS.

Since their SDK utilizes Adobe AIR, you can create tablet applications without the need to learn a new development languages. Taking existing AIR applications and deploying them to a tablet device couldn’t be easier.

With the BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK you can now take those engaging applications and deploy thing seamlessly onto a BlackBerry Playbook with minimal code changes. Integrating those applications into the powerful BlackBerry network of information and integration.

HTML5 vs. Adobe Flash: Where do you stand?

The controversy for the “hearts and minds” of Web professionals heats up as press reports reflect that Steve Jobs goes public with a statement that Adobe’s Flash software has fallen short as a mobile technology. At issue is the public debate between the companies over the program used to create online video. Clearly, the case for HTML5 vs. Adobe Flash is sure to intensify in the weeks and months to come.

The Story Line

Apple has “few joint interests” with Adobe, Mr. Jobs said in a post on Apple’s Web page Thursday, citing six reasons he doesn’t want Flash for mobile devices. He called the program closed and proprietary, saying the decision to bar it from Apple’s devices is based on technology, not business.

Apple’s efforts to convince programmers to adopt other ways to get video to work on Web sites threatens Flash’s dominance. San Jose, Calif.-based Adobe is fighting for the hearts and minds of Web-site developers, many of whom view Apple’s iPhone, iPod Touch and newly released iPad tablet as platforms they can’t ignore.

HTML5, a standard Apple uses instead of Flash, is a “completely open” technology, said Mr. Jobs. HTML5 lets Web developers create graphics and animations without relying on third-party browser plug-ins, such as Flash, he said.

“Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind,” Mr. Jobs said according to press reports.

Adobe highlighted the risks of exclusion from Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices for the first time in a regulatory filing this month, signalling the snub could hurt sales according t the report.

More than 75% of online videos run on Flash, and the software is installed on about 98% of personal computers connected to the Internet, according to Adobe. Flash also runs on more than 800 million mobile phones, manufactured by 19 of the top 20 handset makers — all except Apple.

Report: Internet, broadband, and cell phone statistics

Internet users tend to skew young, with a sharp drop-off in online activity among 65 and older.

Overview of the Pwe Internet and American Life Project

In a national survey between November 30 and December 27, 2009, we find:

74% of American adults (ages 18 and older) use the internet – a slight drop from our survey in April 2009, which did not include Spanish interviews. At that time we found that 79% of English-speaking adults use the internet.

60% of American adults use broadband connections at home – a drop that is within the margin of error from 63% in April 2009.

55% of American adults connect to the internet wirelessly, either through a WiFi or WiMax connection via their laptops or through their handheld device like a smart phone. This figure did not change in a statistically significant way during 2009.

These data come from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. The most recent survey was conducted from November 30 to December 27, 2009, using landline and cell phones and including interviews in Spanish. Some 2,258 adults were interviewed and the overall sample has a margin of error of ± 2 percentage points.

Internet Users

Not all Pew Internet Project surveys include Spanish interviews, so these survey results are not completely comparable to all previous Project surveys. This latest survey finds that 74% of adults use the internet, a figure that has not markedly changed since early 2006, when we measured the online population at 73%. There is some variation from survey to survey. Here is the current profile of internet users:1

These latest figures add to a long-term picture in Pew Internet Project data that there has been little significant growth in the overall internet user population since 2006.

Broadband Users

Again, this survey included Spanish interviews and that somewhat decreased the number of Americans reporting that they have broadband connections in their homes. Some 60% of adult Americans said they had home broadband connections in this survey and here is a portrait of the home broadband users:2

Broadband use at home has risen fairly consistently since the Pew Internet Project began to measure it in 2000, but growth rate has slowed somewhat in the general population.

Wireless Users

Overall, 55% of Americans connect to the internet wirelessly at least on occasion. The Pew Internet Project measures wireless connectivity to the internet in several ways. First, it looks at those who connect via standard computer. Some 46% of adults now own laptop and, among them, 83% connect via WiFi and 28% connect via wireless broadband. In this survey, we also found that 83% of adults have cell phones or smartphones and, among them, 35% have accessed the internet via their phone. Here is the portrait of wireless users:

The holiday season is upon us and its time to send in your wish list to Santa. The Droid Smart Phone is an ideal gift suggestion that’s bound to please the Web professional in all of us.

Droid Smart Phone Support Google

Droid is the first handset to sport the latest version of the Google (NasdaqGS:GOOG – News)-backed Android operating system, version 2.0. It costs $200 after a $100 rebate, with a two-year Verizon Wireless service contract. Besides Verizon stores, the phone will be sold at Best Buy (NYSE:BBY – News), Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT – News) and Costco (NasdaqGS:COST – News).

Avian Securities analyst Matthew Thornton estimates 800,000 Droid phones will be sold through Dec. 31. Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S – News)sold about 700,000 Palm (NasdaqGS:PALM – News) Pre handsets in the first three months of that smart phone’s release this summer, while Apple sold 1.1 million iPhones in its first three months, in 2007. “The Droid reviews have been overwhelmingly favorable,” Thornton said according to a news report in IBD last week.

Motorola (NYSE:MOT – News) needs a hit. Market tracker iSuppli says Motorola had a 5.4% share of the global market as of June 30, down from 22.5% three years ago.

“Droid is potentially a game changer for Motorola,” iSuppli analyst Tina Teng said in a statement.

Seven handset makers have licensed Android, including Samsung, LG Electronics, Sony Ericsson (NYSE:SNE – News) (NasdaqGS:ERIC – News) and HTC. Carriers providing service also include Sprint and T-Mobile.

Android’s share of the market for handset operating systems will rise to 9% in 2013 from 2.4% in the second quarter, forecasts iSuppli. Research firm Gartner, however, projects Android’s share will hit 14.5% by 2012, moving into second place behind only Nokia (NYSE:NOK – News)-led Symbian, surpassing Apple and Research In Motion’s (NasdaqGS:RIMM – News) BlackBerry. Android is open and free to all handset makers, while Apple and RIM keep a close hold on their operating systems.

Tim McLaughlin, president and founder of Siteworx, a Web site and application developer for computer and mobile platforms, has yet a different outlook. He says the smart-phone market will become a two-horse race between the iPhone and Android phones, with Android winning. “In the long run, Android will prevail,” he said. “Droid represents the first real competitor to iPhone.” according to last weeks IBD.

There’s a comparison with the PC and Mac battle, he says. The Microsoft Windows/Intel platform was essentially open and accumulated 90% of the market. Apple kept a close hold on its Macintosh platform, which gave it a much smaller — albeit loyal — following.

“Unless Apple changes its business model, the Android will prevail,” McLaughlin said according to the IBD.
