Interview Katherine Spencer Lee from Robert Half Technology.?

We’ve been conducting research? provided by? the US department of labor and we’ve been speaking with small and large businesses that hire? aspiring and practicing IT workers.? Our research is suggesting a? gap between available jobs and having enough? IT Pros? to fill those jobs.

Today I’m speaking with Katherine Spencer Lee, Executive Director? at Robert Half International.

Robert Half International is a major? force in? IT employment? and we’re wondering what your take is Katherine on the current IT job market,? specifically, is it? getting larger in the US and? what effect Web 2.0 companies are? having, if any,? on the IT job market?

Also very much worth mentioning is the Robert Half Technology 2007 Salary Guide. According to the guide, software developers will see the greatest starting salary gains of any job classification in 2007, with base compensation expected to rise 5.1%, to the range of $60,250 to $94,750 annually. (Editors note: “Yay!”)

Our sincere thanks go out to everyone at Robert Half Technology and Katherine Spencer Lee for the interview. It’s a great time to be a technology worker, enjoy your day and happy aloha Friday.

On May 23rd? in Las Vegas we’ll be at a Panel Discussion with IT leaders from around the country. We’re also planning a technology Innovators Awards Ceremony following the panel discussion.? We produced some audio in a podcast format over at WhyITNow.org to help folks understand the approach being taken to address some of our current issues like education and employment.

I recently called Bill Cullifer to ask him specifically about the “Why IT Now” panel discussion and Technology Innovators Awards Ceremony. In addition to detailing a very straight-forward agenda, this is what he had to say, “Brent, we’re bringing industry leaders together to address some of the toughest education and employment issues within IT. We also want to promote and recognize those leading innovators that are creating the demand and job opportunities? here in the U.S.”

So there ya go, if you want to be involved in the initiatives that are making a difference in our profession check out the WhyITNow.org website and come see us at Interop in Vegas. Don’t forget, we’re also hosting a golf tournament that’s shaping up to be the funniest event of the year.

    FCC Probing Broadband Providers

by Fred on April 6, 2007

The FCC is investigating whether or not broadband providers are doing anything to stifle competition on the web. Net Neutrality is still very much at stake and a recent decision by freeconferencecall.com to counter-sue AT&T could be revealing for either side by the time this one is over.

Specifically, the FCC is looking at whether companies like AT&T, Verizon or Comcast are setting aside higher speed connections for their own web services, perhaps blocking competing services or putting in place plans to charge Internet companies higher fees.

As long as no laws are passed either way, this will continue to be an issue.? There’s? ton of money at stake for everyone closely involved. Read more about the freeconferencecall.com case which strikes at the heart of the matter from our resources at wowtechminute.com.

According to press reports, each song will cost $1.29. After you buy it, there will be no? DRM to stop you from ripping it or sharing it. The quality will be doubled but the cost is? thirty cents higher than the same song right next to it in iTunes. EMI also has DRM Free videos for sale. No price change there. If you already bought an EMI label artist’s music you can upgrade to DRM Free for 30 cents according to reports listed below.

Steve Jobs called for DRM Free music and he got it. EMI is the third largest record label? behind? Universal and Sony.

If listeners gravitate towards? music they can easily share, today will be a milestone in music and information freedom.

Yahoo! Mail is now offering unlimited storage. Competition is good. Maybe Google and Microsoft will step it up too.

Here’s a new Google mobile feature you might not have heard about, text your flight number to Google at 466453 and Google will return your flight information. Now that’s nice. Especially since they just signed a deal with LG to put Google Mobile on millions of phones.

WebProNews reports MySpace revenue? at about 30 million per month according to? one analyst. Rupert Murdoch purchased MySpace in 2005 for 580 million. Revenue is expected to double next year.

Also according to WebProNews, “Shoppers looking to purchase Dell PCs and notebooks will now have a choice between Windows Vista and Linux-based operating systems for their new machines.”

First, a quick reminder that Adobe is announcing the launch of their new creative suite tomorrow, that’s our Tuesday for those of you in a? far away time zone. This is the first major launch since acquiring Macromedia and subsequently some of my favorite tools. Let’s hope the integrations? went silky-smooth.

So I have a question for you. What do longjump, Proto, Teqlo, Calgoo, Tungle, System One, blogtronics, Cogenz and Stikkit have in common? They’re all companies you’ve probably never heard of. They’re also companies you may want to learn about since they’re all about the current state of the Internet and each are carving out a product or service niche you may also have never thought of.

Things are changing out there folks and it’s time you dig back in and learn something new. Not because any of these companies will become Google or Microsoft. You need to learn about these companies to stay informed on the latest trends so you don’t make a stupid mistake or recommendation at your job that will cost you or your company money.

The links to the companies are here at wowtechminute.com. It’s time to look.
