Today I am here with Bebo White,? Departmental Associate (Retired) Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), a member of the team who established the first Website in the United States, and WOW Advisory Board Member.
Bebo, good afternoon.?
I am often asked to respond about the benefits of CSS and the “rants and raves” in the Web design community regarding the use of CSS and I would like to hear your thoughts.? Could you tell our listeners the value of CSS and what’s going on in the Web? design community regarding the use of CSS?
“The value of CSS is that it allows the Web professional the ability to easily separate Web-based content from its presentation.? It’s clear that such separation must be a guiding principle as designers address the needs of an increasing number of user agents or browsers and user differences. CSS along with with XHTML is the first generation of technologies that support adherence to this principle. In my opinion, the roleof CSS in Web design is similar to the role of programming languages in software design. CSS will be replaced in the future by something better just as Pascal was replaced by C.
It’s the fundamental principles that stay important, not the “technology of the moment.” We must be careful to keep the “technology of the moment” in context.? WOW, as an organization that represents Web professionals, needs to foster a spirit of growth, cooperation, and? community among all practitioners of the Web including the aspiring as? well as practicing professional.? While we encourage the use of? technologies like CSS, we strongly discourage the “cult-like” attitude that so? often grows up around the gurus and practitioners of specific? technologies.”
