The Novell Microsoft deal could have some pretty interesting affects on Open Source Software. TheRegister.com is reporting that, “Under the Microsoft-Novell deal, Novell agrees to recognize Microsoft’s intellectual property claims. Novell in return receives a “Covenant Not To Sue”.
This could send ripples all the way back to the European Commission and U.S. Open Source pundits are trippin’ on the news.
I don’t believe the Open Source movement has done a good enough job at explaining just what Open Source means.? There are differences between “pay? software use and development”? and “free software use? and development? and there are reasons to use a combined approach to software buying and use.
Either side would argue that the differences are vast but for me when it comes to spending time and money, one size doesn’t fit all. It’s been my experience that none of these camps have it right and what I think is necessary in our profession is acceptance and use of a combined approach to software? and hardware.
