AT&T merges with BellSouth and Admits Net Neutrality Exists

There’s been a bit of movement in the Net Neutrality debate. Although not binding, for two years AT&T has agreed to not limit or charge more for bandwidth based on the customer. This should keep the playing field level for everyone for a while. Net Neutrality proponents say this could buy enough time to get some legislation in the books to further delay the bandwidth providers. AT&T would like to charge some users such as Internet voice or video service providers higher prices for creating services that use a larger slice of the Internet bandwidth pie.

It could be bogus to get the government involved in restricting Internet bandwidth but is making sure no one else restricts bandwidth worth getting them involved? I doubt anyone wants the everyday web surfer to pay more for faster access but that’s kinda what we’re doing already. As Wi-Fi and Wi-Max spread will it really matter?
