Donald Norman wins the Benjamin Franklin Medal

So you’re walking up to a door you’ve never been through. As you get closer you notice there’s a nice handle to pull and so you step up, give it a nice pull and your arm almost comes off because you were supposed to push when you pulled.

Someone designed the door handle to look like you should pull it. That’s the sort of thing Donald Norman deals with. He’s a usability guru among other things and he has a way of explaining everyday design like no one else and as Bruce Nussbaum writes, “Forget the Nobels, the 2006 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science was just awarded to a hero of mine, Donald Norman.” I agree Bruce.
