Greetings WOW Members and Web Professionals everywhere! Bill Cullifer here with the World Organization of Webmasters (WOW) and the WOW Technology Minute.
I?’m in Beijing, China all week participating in the annual WWW International Web conference. I am also here with Professors Mark DuBois and Bebo White and together we?’re delivering WOW education and certification to the local and international Web professional community.
While here, I am making it a point to meet and interview a wide variety of Web professionals from the education and the scientific community with the goal of providing the listeners of this podcast an executive summary of the goings on.
Earlier today for example, I had the pleasure of bumping into Sir Tim Berners-Lee who as you know is credited for inventing the Web and heads up the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Sir Tim Berners-Lee was gracious enough to pose for the photo with Professor DuBois, WOW Director of Education complete with the with the WOW sign of acknowledgement. His presence at the WWW event is appreciated by all that attended. I?’ll be reporting on his Keynote address later in the week.
This morning?’s keynote was delivered by Dr. Kai-Fu Lee Vice President of Engineering at Google and the President of Google Greater China. Dr. Kai-Fu Lee?’s presentation was simple yet elegant and I walked away with an improved understanding of Google?’s commitment for an anywhere and anytime Web. Dr. Kai-Fu Lee spoke in depth about the benefits of a fundamental shift from PC based applications to cloud based applications that “liberates the user from having to remember where the data is”, enabling the user to access information anywhere once created and accessible from not only a PC but also telephones, automobiles, televisions and appliances.
Dr. Kai-Fu Lee also spoke about Google?’s language translation efforts. If you?’re not familiar with their research in this area I highly recommend that you follow the links below to learn more. Google has committed a significant amount of research to conducting analysis of various languages that has one awards for translating Chinese websites to English with amazing results. If you?’ve been practicing in the Web space for a while then I needn?’t say more about what that means to our profession and to the customers we serve.
Stay tuned for more coverage from Beijing and check out all of the great links at the wowtechminute.com website.
